MPhil / Doctorate / PhD Programmes

The Postgraduate Research Programme leading to the PhD degree holds recognition from ESRC. It relies on individual research throughout the three years of the full-time program (equivalent to five years part-time). However, for full-time candidates, the first year of research combines with compulsory enrollment in taught Doctoral modules.

ERSC acknowledges the MPhil program, involving two years of full-time individual research (or three years part-time). Similar to the PhD program, full-time candidates must actively enroll in taught Doctoral modules during the initial year of research.

As a Doctoral student, you become part of a lively community of research students and staff, integrating into the School’s research culture. We encourage conference and symposia attendance, as well as the development of joint publications with your Supervisor. A dedicated fund, open to all research students on a year-by-year basis, partially supports these activities.

Your Research Programme

Doctoral students collaborate with academic staff on research projects and on their dissertations. Because of this close working relationship, applicants should make sure the School is a good academic fit. There is a core group of staff within the program who are involved in research areas that are of interest to them.

Being a Research Student at the School

Research Students at the School are an integral part of their research activities and culture, enjoying the support of a very diverse and well-rounded community. Students come from across the UK and all over the globe to study here, bringing their individual perspectives and ideas.
